ภาพรวมพื้นที่ชุ่มน้ำ (Wetlands) สำนักงานนโยบายและแผนทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม กระทรวงทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม ได้สำรวจและพบว่าประเทศไทยมีพื้นที่ชุ่มน้ำ ประกอบด้วยป่าชายเลน ป่าพรุ หนอง บึง สนุ่น ทะเลสาบและแม่น้ำกระจายอยู่ทั่วประเทศ คิดเป็นพื้นที่ประมาณ 22.88 ล้านไร่ หรือคิดเป็นร้อยละ 6.75 ของพื้นที่ประเทศไทย โดยแบ่งกลุ่มตามลำดับความสำคัญตามอนุสัญญาแรมซาร์ได้ ดังนี้ พื้นที่ชุ่มน้ำที่มีความสำคัญระดับระหว่างประเทศ (Ramsar Sites) 15 แห่ง พื้นที่ชุ่มน้ำที่มีความสำคัญระดับนานาชาติ 69 แห่ง พื้นที่ชุ่มน้ำที่มีความสำคัญระดับชาติ 47 แห่ง
